Residents of Chinna Kollyur village in the Rishivandiyam constituency of Kallakurichi district staged a road blockade on Friday, demanding the immediate construction of a drainage canal in their area. The protest, held on the Sankarapuram – Thirukovilur highway, caused traffic disruption for approximately half an hour.
According to the protesting residents, over 1000 people live in Chinna Kollyur village. A significant issue in Mariamman Kovil Street within the village is the lack of a proper drainage canal. This absence leads to the accumulation of stagnant wastewater, creating unsanitary conditions. Residents claim that this stagnant water has resulted in infectious diseases affecting children and the elderly in the locality.
Villagers reported that they have repeatedly appealed to the Panchayat administration regarding the issue and the need for a drainage system, but their requests have gone unaddressed. Frustrated by the lack of action, the residents resorted to the road blockade to highlight their plight.
During the protest, residents sat on the highway and prevented a government bus from proceeding, demanding that authorities construct the necessary drainage canal. The demonstration caused a brief period of tension in the area before concluding. Traffic movement on the Sankarapuram – Thirukovilur highway was affected for about thirty minutes due to the blockade.
