Following the Pahalgam attack, India imposes bans on Pakistani imports, ports, and vows decisive action. Investigation underway amidst heightened LoC tensions.

India Escalates Response After Pahalgam Attack, Vows Decisive Action

In the wake of the recent attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India has significantly intensified its response, imposing sweeping bans on imports and port access from Pakistan and reiterating a firm commitment to bringing those responsible to justice. The moves signal a heightened state of diplomatic and security posture between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

Effective immediately, India has banned all direct and indirect imports, as well as inbound mail and parcels originating from or transiting through Pakistan. Adding to the restrictions, Pakistani ships are now prohibited from using Indian ports. These economic and logistical measures underscore New Delhi’s resolve following the attack.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a strong statement, affirming India’s dedication to undertaking “firm and decisive action” against not only the perpetrators of the Pahalgam incident but also those who support them. This declaration comes amidst continued tensions along the Line of Control (LoC), where Pakistan has reportedly violated the ceasefire multiple times, prompting prompt retaliation from Indian forces. The recent apprehension of a Pakistani Ranger by the Border Security Force (BSF) near the Rajasthan border further highlights the volatile security situation.

Sources indicate that intelligence chatter prior to the attack had hinted at potential plans to target tourist locations in Jammu and Kashmir, raising questions about potential security lapses or the difficulty in pre-empting such strikes.

Meanwhile, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken charge of the probe into the Pahalgam attack. As part of their extensive investigation, the NIA has questioned approximately 100 local residents. Among those questioned is a shopkeeper whose establishment remained closed on the day of the incident, suggesting investigators are examining all potential angles and movements related to the attack. Investigators are also exploring possible links between the Pahalgam attack and previous incidents in Kulgam and Poonch, attempting to ascertain if a single group is behind multiple strikes. The challenging terrain and the presence of civilian populations continue to pose significant hurdles in tracking down the terrorists involved.

Beyond security and economic measures, India has also enacted diplomatic steps, including the closure of the Attari Integrated Check Post and the suspension of the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals. Furthermore, India has announced the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, a significant development impacting a long-standing bilateral agreement.

In response to India’s actions and statements, Pakistan has issued a warning, stating it would utilize its “full spectrum of power” should India initiate any attack. Islamabad has also ordered that Indian flag carriers will not be permitted to visit any Pakistani port.

The developments following the Pahalgam attack highlight the complex and escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, with significant implications for regional stability and bilateral relations.
